Help for families in need - We Strengthen Families

Today, 1 in 10 children and young people are separated from their families, abandoned, neglected or forced to live in an abusive environment, growing up without the support they need to prepare them for their future.

Due to challenging circumstances, parents/families struggle to provide their children with a loving and stable home.

Family Empowerment

SOS Children's Villages Nigeria's Direct Family Empowerment program is a crucial part of our work to support vulnerable children and families. The Direct Family Empowerment Programme follows a case management approach to ensure that each family can access holistic support. Each family has a family development plan including their development goals and specific activities. The family development plan is jointly reviewed with the family at least every 6 months, including the participation of children and young people, respecting the family’s privacy and autonomy in all support activities and channels.

The idea is to prevent family breakdown by providing support to families facing challenges, this means helping families stay together, which is considered the best environment for a child's development.

Types of Support - Economic Empowerment

Providing training and resources to help parents generate income and become self-sufficient, this includes skills development, vocational training, and support for starting small businesses. In recent years, the organization has employed the group income generation as a means to sustain the livelihoods of caregivers and improve their capacity to provide care.

Types of Support - Social Support

Each child and each family is part of a community. We work with partners to develop strong social support systems for children and families to develop, grow and learn in a positive, supportive environment. Our allies include community-based organisations, local authorities and governments. Together we build resilience in vulnerable families, offering counseling and guidance to help families cope with challenges. We also provide education on parenting skills, household management, and violence prevention.

I live at a Alhajiri in Borno State. I have a sick child that I have to take care of and the medical bills can get overwhelming from month to month. SOS Children's Villages has been of great help to me, they have assisted me with health insurance, so my child can access medical care free of care.
