SOS Children’s Villages Edo location is in the southern part of Nigeria and resides at No 8 Chief Alonge Avenue off State CID Road, off Sapele Road, GRA, Benin City, Edo State. launched in 2019 to reduce child vulnerability through family, youth, and community empowerment, the program location collaborates and partners with the State Government, line ministries, agencies, INGO’s CBO’s, community leaders as well as other stakeholders in the implementation of care and support to vulnerable groups in communities where we work, supporting families and communities and government to provide care and protection for children everywhere we reach.
The project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and consists of three main components which are; family strengthening, youth development, and mental health and psychosocial support
So far, Edo location has implemented five projects, and they include:
- BMZ 1: The reducing child vulnerability project reached 1619 children from 399 families and 325 youths in Uzebu and Umegbe, communities in Oredo LGA of Edo state to have their rights protected through family strengthening, Youth Development and advocacy for quality care/partnerships.
- Combating Human Trafficking in Nigeria: The Combatting human trafficking in Nigeria project focused on standardization of protection and prevention services for women and young people in Edo State reaching 510 families, 615 children, across 10 LGAs in Edo State and was funded by the EU through Expertise France and co-implemented by Idia Renaissance
- BIWE: The Career Orientation and Job placement for Youth in Nigeria Project was also implemented in the program Location alongside Lagos and Ogun program locations reaching 2239 secondary school and out of school youths with skills to make better career and vocational choices with the support of trained 82 career counsellors (multipliers) as well as 160 young persons with better sales and marketing and employability skills, and it was funded by BIWE international
- GIZ SKYE: The Youth Empowerment Through Skills Development project was a rural based youth development project funded by GIZ SKYE and reached 625 Youths.
- BMZ11: Currently, Edo Location implements the Improving Livelihoods and Empowering Vulnerable Households in Edo State, Nigeria project which is a four-year initiative which seeks to reach 250 families with 1000 children of low socio-economic status with livelihood support, improved mental health and Psychosocial support as well as 200 youths across the state with employability and entrepreneurship skills.
The most “unique” thing about Edo location is the cross-cutting issues around youths and migration this can attract donor funded projects to support skills building and empowerment. Edo location enjoys strong collaboration with government agencies and leverages on already existing partnerships, structures and agencies put in place to aid youth empowerment.
